#37 Vertical Remix

36" x 46"
acrylic on canvas

While physically layered with paint, this one is more about a layer of ideas:

Layer 1: Physical watercolor drawing by filmmaker Peter Greenaway made in the late 1970's

Layer 2: The Peter Greenaway film Vertical Features Remake (1978) in which various fictional academics recreate a hypothetical film by a fictional artist based on his drawings, notes and film fragments. The watercolor drawing of Layer 1 is used in this film.

Layer 3: The video short, Vertical Features Remix (2009) by digital and internet artist Curt Cloninger in which he takes screen shots from Vertical Features Remake (Layer 2) and digitally remixes them into new digital paintings. A cropped section of the watercolor drawing of Layer 1 is remixed in this short.

Layer 4: Physical and magnified scale painting, Vertical Remix, by Jeremy Phillips, based on one screen shot from Curt Cloninger's cropped image (Layer 3) of Peter Greenaway's watercolor drawing (Layer 1).

#34 Peripatetic Labyrinth

36" x 62"
acrylic on wood

This painting has 3 basic layers: First a loose color foundation; second a layer of what appear to be overlapping rectangles creating an illusion of overlapping depth, but actually constitute one single layer; third, the connecting labyrinths based on medieval meditation patterns.
